How do I calculate an appliance’s electricity cost?+

Multiply watts by operating hours, divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours, then multiply by your electricity rate. This page’s calculator does that for common household loads.

What appliances use electricity when turned off?+

Televisions, game consoles, chargers, smart speakers, cable boxes and appliances with clocks or remote controls may draw standby power. A plug-in energy monitor can measure the actual load.

How much backup power do I need for a refrigerator?+

A refrigerator may average 100–250 watts while running but require a higher short starting surge. Add the running loads, account for surge demand and decide how many hours the system must operate.

Can a DIY energy system replace the electric grid?+

Do not assume so. Product performance depends on the design, available energy source, storage and household load. Permanent wiring and transfer equipment should be reviewed and installed by a qualified electrician.
