How Much Fuel Does a Generator Use Per Day?
Estimate generator fuel use from load, runtime and manufacturer consumption data, with essential carbon-monoxide safety guidance.
Daily generator fuel use depends on generator size, fuel type, electrical load, efficiency and operating hours. Use the manufacturer’s consumption figure at a load close to yours, then multiply gallons per hour by planned runtime; do not extrapolate from the fuel-tank size alone.

Estimate fuel from the load chart
List essential running watts and likely simultaneous loads. Find the generator maker’s fuel-consumption chart at 25%, 50% or the closest rated load. Multiply that hourly figure by the number of operating hours.
For example, a stated 0.4 gallon per hour for 10 hours implies four gallons. This is an example only; actual figures must come from the specific generator and fuel.
Reduce fuel without compromising safety
A heavily oversized generator may operate inefficiently at a light load. A planned run schedule, cold storage strategy and battery for small overnight loads can reduce generator hours, provided the system is designed correctly.
