How Much Electricity Does an Old Freezer Use?
Estimate an older freezer’s kWh, running cost and replacement payback without relying on guesswork.
An old freezer’s use varies too much for age alone to give a reliable number. Measure it over at least 24–72 hours with a plug-in energy monitor, then multiply daily kWh by 365 and your electricity rate to estimate annual cost.

Why nameplate watts are not annual usage
The compressor cycles, so the freezer does not draw its running wattage continuously. Room temperature, door openings, frost, dirty coils and worn seals all change the duty cycle.
A meter showing 1.8 kWh per day implies about 657 kWh per year. At $0.17/kWh, that is roughly $112 per year.
Measure before you replace
Run a suitably rated plug-in energy monitor for several typical days. Include warmer weather if the freezer is in a garage. Compare the measured annual cost with the verified energy label and price of a replacement.

Calculate a realistic payback
Subtract the new freezer’s estimated annual cost from the old freezer’s measured annual cost. Divide the purchase price by that yearly saving. Include reliability, food-loss risk and useful capacity—not just electricity—in the decision.
